The farm animals produce a lot of manure (animal waste)! Their bedding and “toilet” have to be got rid of properly to avoid pollution (damage to the countryside).

The manure is collected in a heap (a dung heap) until it can be ploughed into the soil. This will improve the soil and add valuable nutrients (food for plants).

Liquid
waste (slurry) is collected in a lagoon (large pond) until the slurry
tanker can spread it over the field. As the liquid drains through the
soil, strange things called bacteria “eat” the nasty bits
(toxins) so that the when the slurry reaches the streams and rivers it
is very much cleaner.
