Introduction

As part of the Isle of Wight Council Children's Services Directorate, Branstone Farm Studies Centre was established in 1973 to give the younger child an opportunity to sample life on a working farm. Although primarily for Island schoolchildren, the Centre extends a warm welcome to school parties from the mainland.

Farm Building

Each guided tour last about 2 hours. There are plenty of opportunities for valuable hands-on experience. Amidst the fun and excitement children learn about animal husbandry, land use, patterns of agriculture, farming techniques and conservation matters. Valuable discussion and follow up work often takes place in the classroom following the tour.

GENERAL INFORMATION FOR VISITORS

Branstone Farm Studies Centre is situated five and a half miles out of Newport on the A3056 (Newport to Sandown road). It is open during term time and by arrangement, during school holidays. School parties are welcome mornings and afternoons with sessions beginning at 10.00am and 2.00pm.

It is expected that children will be suitably dressed for the visit...a farm visit! This will include adequate footwear, preferably Wellington boots. Children will naturally be expected to exercise a certain amount of self control. Unruly behaviour not only upsets the animals and interrupts the smooth running of the farm but it may also subject the child (and others) to unnecessary danger. Facilities include toilets, picnic area, coach park and classroom. Refreshments are available to staff free of charge!
