The Hedgerow

The Hedgerow (Autumn/Winter)

Hedgerow and field

As the days shorten, the leaves of the hedgerow trees and bushes begin to fall. The slender stems of the elder have long given up their dark purple berries which provided valuable food for many birds in late summer.

With fallen leaves, an abandoned nest can be seen nestling between the ‘Y’ shaped branches of a young oak tree.

With the ivy flowering late in October, the bees are treated to a last minute treat before winter sets in. Hundreds of worker bees will collect the nectar to top up the hive’s winter food supply of honey.

The dense growth of the hawthorn will be a perfect location for a blackbird’s nest in the spring.
